Leaving Cantabria to get to Madrid and the centre of the peninsula, one option is the N-623 road going through Burgos via the El Escudo mountain pass, or the N-611 (A-67) which passes through the provinces of Palencia and Valladolid. The latter has long stretches of dual carriageway in Cantabria.
