The Cantabrico Motorway (A-8) joins Cantabria and the Basque Country, France and the rest of continental Europe to the east and Asturias and Galicia to the west.
Leaving Cantabria to get to Madrid and the centre of the peninsula, one option is the N-623 road going through Burgos via the El Escudo mountain pass, or the N-611 (A-67) which passes through the provinces of Palencia and Valladolid. The latter has long stretches of dual carriageway in Cantabria.
